A Fianna Fail TD says gender quotas are important to ensure all voices are heard at the decision-making tables.
Niamh Smyth comments come following proposals which could be brought in in the New Year, which could penalise sporting organisations which receive State funding unless they meet gender quotas.
Deputy Smith says because of gender quotas, there are now more women in Dáil Éireann than ever before.
In all, 35 women were elected to Dáil Éireann taking 22.3% of the seats contested in this year’s general election.
Deputy Niamh Smyth says gender quotas have been a success in other EU countries.
