Local boxer says Irish athletes need funding to compete on the world stage

Irish athletes need funding to be able to compete on the world stage.

That’s the view of Carrickmacross boxer Christina McMahon after the Government announced details of its €220 million ten-year National Sports Policy.

Shane Ross says he aims to double the funding for the ‘Women in Sport’ programme next year to €2 million – while €1 million will go to a dedicated programme for Disability Sport.

The Sports Minister also stated that he wants to see more gold medals at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in two years’ time.

Christina McMahon spoke to Northern Sound News, she says funding is vital for Irish athletes to compete at the highest level in their respective sport.
