Local businesses meeting Valuation Office over concerns about rates review

Representatives of local businesses are to meet with the Valuation Office today to discuss their concerns about the ongoing rates revaluation.

Filling stations across Cavan and Monaghan are reporting proposed increases of 200 to 300 per cent in their annual rates bill because of changes in how their rates are calculated.

Currently the business’s square footage is the basis for the rates but the new system will see its turnover used instead.

Some local filling stations have said the changes could force them out of business.

Fabiola Martin from Newbliss is among the delegation from the Petrol Retailers Association that’s meeting with the Valuation Office today.

An online petition started by her has garnered 1,200 signatures in support of their campaign.
