A local Fianna Fáil TD says trainee nurses are caught in a “no man’s land” when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic.
Local TD Niamh Smyth is calling on trainee nurses to be financially compensated for their placements in hospitals during the COVID-19 crisis.
Deputy Smyth said this was essential because trainee nurses are not entitled to social benefits during their unpaid placements.
She added that it is unsustainable to expect trainee nurses to work in the frontline without pay and that this period might discourage them from remaining in our hospital networks once they are fully qualified.
