Local MEP says there are concerns over Ursula von der Leyen’s term as European Commission President

A local Sinn Fein MEP says there are concerns about how Ursula von der Leyen might lead the European Commission.

The German defence minister was last night ratified as Jean-Claude Juncker’s replacement, but only by 9 votes.

Her views on preventing a hard Brexit has been welcomed by Fine Gael’s Mairead McGuinness and other Irish MEPs.

However, Sinn Fein’s Matt Carthy says her views on militarisation and record on austerity is not what Irish people should support.
