Local Senator Robbie Gallagher has called for more staff to deal with claims under the Cross Border Directive.
The scheme is an EU agreement that allows European citizens to access healthcare in other countries.
After treatment you claim a reimbursement of your expenses, but Senator Gallagher claims there are delays to the payments because of a lack of staff to process them.
He says the number of people using the scheme has increased from 37 in 2014 to 5,379 in 2018, with no increase in the number of staff processing claims.
He says some people have taken out loans to pay for procedures and are now facing extra costs because of the delays.
