TD Niamh Smyth has called for extra resources to deal with social welfare applications, which are facing a back log of up to 16 weeks.
Carers are waiting 16 weeks for applications to be finalised while Disability Allowance applicants waiting 14 weeks. Deputy Smyth says some of these people are without any money until such a time that their Disability Allowance is granted.
She claims 5,374, Disability applications were waiting to be assessed in January 2019. Similarly almost 4000 Carer applications were pending in January. She has appealed to Minister Regina Doherty, to put extra resources in place to deal with the backlogs, encouraging residents to apply early in the meantime.
