Local TD calls for redrawing of EU constituencies to include Northern Ireland

A local TD is calling on the Government to redraw the country’s European Parliament constituencies to include Northern Ireland. The North will lose its representation in the EU Parliament after Brexit, with Caoimhghín Ó’Caoláin calling for the Irish Government to create another constituency.

He’s suggested the extra MEPs Ireland is set to gain later this year should be used to represent the people of the north, rather than be distributed across existing constituencies. Deputy Ó’Caoláin says Sinn Féin made a submission to the Constituency Commission calling for this but it wasn’t considered:

Theresa May has to take a risk of a “no deal” off the table for Brexit talks to progress. Vice President of the European Parliament Mairead McGuinness says that the British Prime Minister must look for flexibility in the agreement to prevent a hard border.

She’s described the current deadlock as a “conundrum” that must be solved in less than 50 days. However speaking on Northern Sound, Mairead McGuinness said Theresa May is caught between two opposing views.
