Local TD says he wouldn’t want his children growing up near Eirgrid pylons

A Sinn Féin TD he will not stand by while Eirgrid gambles with people’s lives.

Caoimhghín O’Caoláin was reacting to comments made by former Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte – who dismissed the impact pylons have on people’s health.

It follows approval for the development of 299 pylons across Cavan, Meath and Monaghan, as part of EirGrid’s North-South Interconnector project.

During the An Bord Pleanala oral hearing into the project earlier this year, local landowners, residents and campaign groups have raised concerns over health, house prices and the effect to the environment – with calls for the interconnector to be put underground.

While Pat Rabbitte dismissed the idea that these pylons impacted on people’s health – Deputy O’Caoláin says he wouldn’t want his children growing up near them.
