Mairead McGuinness elected in Midlands-North West on first count

 

Mairead McGuinness is the first Irish MEP to be elected to the European Parliament after voting on Friday.

The Fine Gael MEP was returned after she topped the poll in the four seater Midlands North West constituency. Counting continues at the country’s three centres.

Ireland will return 13 members to the Parliament in Brussels. Although two will not take up their seats until after Brexit.

Mairead McGuinness topped the poll with 134,630, followed by Luke Ming Flanagan on 85,034. Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy follows on 77,619.

Fianna Fáil’s Brendan Smith is in 7th place on 42,814.
