Cavan recorded their first competitive win over Tyrone in seventeen years at Kingspan Breiffni Park today with a four point victory in the McKenna Cup to get Mattie McGleenan’s reign as the new Breiffni manager off to a winning start. Cavan emerged victorious by 1-13 to 0-12.over the four-in-a-row champions.
Cavan led at the interval by 1-07 to 0-05 with Gerry Smith scoring the goal with a brilliant flick over Tyrone keeper Niall Morgan.
Cavan continued their dominance in the second-half despite losing Niall McDermott to a red card with ten minutes of normal time to go, however, the Breiffni men held on to run out winners to get their McKenna Cup campaign off to a winning start.
Tyrone finished the game with fourteen players after Mattie Donnelly was red-carded in the latter stages of the game after striking Seanie Johnston, and Johnston himself was black carded out of the game shortly afterwards.
