Members of Monaghan County Council are calling for an exact timescale on the re-opening of Emyvale Garda Station.
The building was badly damaged in a suspected arson attack last October and the existing station was demolished with its former married quarters set to be refurbished for use as the new Garda Station.
However, local councillors have raised concerns over the slow progress, with many criticising the 6 month wait time for a response from the Justice Minister following a request for a progress report made last November.
Minister Charlie Flanagan has said planning work on the project began earlier this year but it's not yet known when the station will be operational and informed the council it was the OPW who had responsibility for the completion of the project.
Independent Councillor Paudge Connolly who requested the initial and subsequent updates, says a Garda Station is more important than ever for the village now.
He feels that given the fact that it is a border town, in the lead up to the No Deal Brexit scenario and the cross border travelling that could impact on further surges of Covid -19, a Garda presence is essential for the area.
Councillor Connolly says that while there are still Gardai present in the area they need a permanent station.
