Monaghan auctioneer calls for incentives to repopulate towns

A Monaghan auctioneer believes tax-breaks should be introduced to encourage people to live in the centre of towns again.

A new report by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland has pointed to a number of measures that should be implemented urgently to stop the decline of main streets.

Shane O’Hanlon, of O’Hanlon Property Management, notes that in the past, people lived above their shops in the centre of towns.

But he says many of these premises are now vacant.

Mr O’Hanlon, who is the chairman of the report’s working group, is calling for incentives to encourage people to live in town centres again.
