A Monaghan Councillor says the county's Women's Assembly will be a great aid in getting local women involved in politics.

The Monaghan Women's Assembly is being launched next Monday, to coincide with International Women's Day.

There are only three female councillors in county Monaghan and Sinn Féin's Cathy Bennett says the Women's Assembly will be a vital tool in bringing female-focused issues to the fore.

A new report from "Women for Election" has found the Irish women are left out of 40% of critical government decision-making tables.

It adds that a lack of maternity leave and online abuse can reduce a woman's chance of success at election.
