Monaghan councillors want to see students and parents offered a rebate for accommodation.
The motion was originally made by Wexford County Council, who are seeking the support of other local authorities across the country.
Sinn Fein's Cathy Bennett said they should support the motion but wanted all accommodation included in the proposal and not just on-campus accommodation.
