Monaghan County Council insist on reuniting Ireland

Local Sinn Féin Councillors have put forward a motion seeking a Government debate on the reunification of Ireland.

The councillors raised the issue in the most recent meeting of Monaghan County Council where they stated that Brexit has created a situation that would be “intolerable” for the people of County Monaghan and Ireland as a whole.

They proposed that the council write to the Taoiseach and the Minister for Foreign Affairs asking that the Irish Government insist on a special status for Northern Ireland within the EU.

They added that the Government must lead a debate on the peaceful reunification of Ireland which analyses and promotes the benefits of the move, and also appoint a Ministry for reunification.

The motion received cross party support.
