Monaghan County Council has passed a motion calling for Distinguished
Service Medals and Military Medals for Gallantry to be awarded to 32 men
from the siege of Jadotville.

Special Jadotville medals were presented in 2017 but the Distinguished
Service and Gallantry medals have not yet been awarded.

The men of 'A' Company, 35th Battalion were on a UN peacekeeping mission in
the Congo - when they were attacked by a much-larger force.

Councillor Colm Carthy raised the issue at a recent Monaghan County Council
meeting and said "time cannot wait any longer for the just recognition
deserved by our brave veterans".

Only eight soldiers who took part in the siege are still alive and the Sinn
Féin Councillors says the awarding of these medals "needs to happen":
