A Monaghan Domestic Abuse Service says people need to recognise the dangers of coercive control.
Siobhan McKenna from Tearmann was speaking after the former boyfriend of Cavan’s Sonya Lee was jailed for 11 years for an unprovoked attack in 2018 that left her brain damaged.
Sonya’s family said the mother of two was “brainwashed” by Lance Dempsey and warned others that it’s never too late to leave abusive relationships.
As of last year, legal protection against coercive control or psychological abuse is included under the Domestic Violence Act.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Siobhan McKenna said we must understand how one form of abuse can lead to others.
