Monaghan collected their first victory of the 2020 Allianz League with a 1-12 to 11 point victory over Mickey Harte’s Tyrone in Castleblayney writes Michael Cooke.
The Farney men were the superior side in the second-half, Karl O’Connell goal sending them on their way to victory.
The sides were level at three points apiece after 11 minutes with Conor McCarthy scoring the opener for the home side followed by a brace from Conor McManus.
Monaghan led by seven points to six at half-time as Niall Kearns, Conor Boyle, Jack McCarron (free) and Kieran Hughes all got on the scoresheet.
Tyrone’s chances of winning were dealt a major blow in the early stages of the second-half after Ronan McNamee was an enforced withdrawal following a collision.
The task became even tougher when wing-back Karl O’Connell scored a 44th minute goal with Monaghan now leading 1-7 to six points.
The goal transpired to be a key moment and Monaghan gave themselves a seven-point cushion when Conor McCarthy slotted over a score in the 57th minute.
Tyrone responded with three points of their own from Darren McCurry, Niall Morgan and David Mulgrew but Monaghan held on for a four-point win, their maiden 2020 Allianz Football League victory.
