The planned Primary Care Centre in Monaghan town could create opportunities for more investment in local healthcare.
The centre had originally been planned for a site next to Monaghan Hospital, however this was deemed to be unsuitable.
Planning on the €9.5 million facility has been ongoing for 10 years.
The HSE has now applied for permission to refurbish Blackwater House on the Saint Davnet’s Campus.
It’s applied to change the use of the building from “outpatient and inpatient health care” to a “primary care centre for north Monaghan”.
It also plans to refurbish the building, replace windows and demolish some internal walls.
The plans also include 62 new car parking spaces and additional works.
A decision on the plans for the protected structure will be made by Monaghan County Council by mid-April.
Cathoirleach of Monaghan Municipal District Sean Conlon welcomed the plans as part of the wider development of the St Davnet’s Complex.
Speaking to Northern Sound News, he said an increase in services for the people of Monaghan must follow.
