Monaghan climbed to third in the Allianz League division one table following a 2-16 to 13 points win over Mayo in Clones.
The sides were level at 1-5 to eight points at the break before Monaghan gained the upper hand following Jordan Flynn’s dismissal after the hour mark
The first 21 minutes were evenly contested with both sides deadlocked at four points apiece as Conor McManus (two), Conor McCarthy, and Karl O’Connell were on target for the hosts.
Six minutes later Monaghan opened up a two-point gap following a free from Rory Beggan and a goal from Conor McCarthy.
Darren Coen and Diarmuid O’Connor subsequently slotted over two successive points sending the teams in level at the interval.
Man-of-the match Conor McCarthy slotted over a point in the 55th minute restoring a three-point cushion for the Farney men.
Moments later Mayo were reduced to 14 men after Jordan Flynn received a second yellow card.
Mayo’s misery was compounded with eight minutes remaining, Kieran Duffy registering Monaghan’s second goal giving them a five-point lead.
The goal initiated a Monaghan onslaught as further scores from Conor McManus (two), Conor Boyle, Shane Carey and Jack McCarron put daylight between the sides.
Paul Towey registered Mayo’s only other score and the Connacht side finished the game with 13 men when Padraig O’Hora was cautioned for the second time.
