Monaghan beat Fermanagh by 1-20 to 1-11 in the Preliminary Round in the Ulster championship after a strong second half showing. Monaghan led by 1-08 to 1-06 at half time with Conor McManus getting Monaghans goal. The winning of the game courtesy of a spell between the 43rd and 61st minute where they got ten unanswered points. Second half substitute Owen Duffy picked up man of the match for his contribution including a tally of 0-03 as they marched onto victory setting up a tie with Cavan in the Ulster championship quarter finals. 13 players were on the scoresheet for Monaghan throughout the game with Conor McManus nabbing the goal in the first half. The first half saw Ryan Lyons get Fermanagh’s goal and Monaghans Kieran Hughes receive a black card, Jack McCarron and Conor McManus kicked the last two points of the half to give them the interval lead. They swapped points after the break but Monaghan then asserted their dominance with ten points before Eddie Courtney returned Fermanagh to the scoreboard but Monaghan prevailed with a nine point win to set up a clash with Cavan in three weeks time while Fermanagh will now enter the qualifers.

Monaghan captain Colin Walshe spoke with Shannonside Northern Sounds Alan Gunn after the game and he says  that they were disappointed at half time but they pressed up further up the field in the second half and enforced errors and got scores on the board. You can hear the interview here

Alan then caught up with the Monaghan manager Malachy O’Rourke. He says it was always going to be a tough game and it took awhile for them to establish daylight and there was a lot of areas they wont be happy with ‘so we’ll have work to do and we are delighted to get a win’.
