Monaghan fell to a 1-14 to 0-16 defeat to Galway in Division One of the Allianz Football League at Pearse Stadium writes Michael Cooke.
A first-half goal proved decisive as Galway survived a late onslaught from Monaghan to prevail by the narrowest of margins.
The teams were level on three occasions before Robert Finnerty scored the only goal of the game after 14 minutes. Galway led by 1-4 to 0-4 at this stage.
Kieran Hughes, Conor McCarthy, Jack McCarron (free) and Rory Beggan then added appoint each as Monaghan trailed by 1-8 to 0-8 at half-time.
Galway began the second half the stronger opening up a four-point cushion within seven minutes but then failed to register for the next 21.
Monaghan enjoyed a purple patch during this period and a point from Aaron Mulligan levelled the game in the 59th minute.
Shane Walsh subsequently edged Galway in front with a free before Conor McManus did likewise for Monaghan.
Monaghan nearly scored a goal after that only for Christopher McGuinness to see his effort cleared off the line.
Damien Comer and Matthias Barrett then restored Galway’s two point advantage only for McManus to reduce it to one in the first minute of injury time.
Monaghan searched for an equaliser but there was none forthcoming as they lost out by the tightest of margins.
