A local councillor says more needs to be done to tackle cigarette litter in
Monaghan.

PJ O'Hanlon told a recent Monaghan County Council meeting that 70% of the
litter in the county is cigarette related.

He's called for more signs to be erected to remind people of the problem and
has asked that the council liaise with schools to make students aware of the
litter issue, as well as the dangers of smoking.

The Council's Chief Executive said the environmental team is already engaged
in a lot of work on this problem, but that the council will redouble their
efforts.

Councillor O'Hanlon says the Council should target a 10 to 15% reduction in
cigarette litter to help the environment, as well as people's health:
