A local Senator has called for a tax rebate or credit for individuals purchasing gym and fitness club memberships.
Senator Robbie Gallagher raised the issue of health and fitness with the Minister for Finance in the Seanad this afternoon.
He believes that prevention is better than the cure, and highlighted that the health budget increases year-on-year.
According to Senator Gallagher, the government should invest in preventative measures, to support people who are trying to stay healthy.
Speaking in the Seanad, the Fianna Fáil man highlighted that people in Ireland are living with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and mental health challenges.
He believes that people who are paying for a gym membership should be able to claim a tax rebate on their costs.
Senator Gallagher said: "Billions of euros are spent each year treating conditions that are often preventable.
"A system that only intervenes after people become ill, will always be under pressure. On the other hand, a system that that supports people to stay healthy, builds resilience.
"When people spend money on activities that keep them fit and healthy, the state should recognise that fact," he added.
