Monaghan suffered a heavy defeat in the opening round of the Nicky Rackard Cup losing 3-32 to 2-10 against Mayo.
Mayo were nine points clear at the break leading by 1-13 to 1-4.
Jason Coyne scored the opening goal of the game for Mayo while Aidan Burns’ found the net for the farney men.
Mayo struck for a second goal two minutes into the second half stretching the lead to 14 points.
Aidan Burns later scored his second goal in the 45th minute leaving his side 9 points in arrears at this stage.
Five minutes later Luke Hurley struck for Mayo’s third goal giving them a 15 point buffer.
The men from the west outscored their opponents by 14 points to three thereafter and finished the game with 25 points to spare.
