There are no plans to restart train services between Kingscourt and Dublin.
The last passenger service on the line ran in 1947. Freight transport continued until 2001 with gypsum from the nearby quarry transported around the country. Irish Rail has confirmed the tracks along the route have been left in place but there are no plans for trains to use them anytime soon.
There’ve been calls for the route to be reopened in order to provide another option for commuting into Dublin. But Irish Rail CEO Jim Meade told the Oireachtas Transport Committee that it won’t happen anytime soon:
