The NYPD Commissioner whose Grandfather was from Monaghan has resigned.

James O’Neill who was the grandson of Irish immigrants, with roots in Longford on his mother’s side, and Monaghan on his father’s, joined the force in 1983.

O’Neill served under Commissioner Bill Bratton and following Bratton’s resignation in August of 2016 became Commission, making him the highest ranking cop in New York.

As his three year tenure finishes, he has announced that he will resign from the post and from the first of December Dermot F. Shea will take over as NYPD Commissioner.
