Overhaul of “Fair Deal” scheme will keep rural Cavan and Monaghan alive

An overhaul of the “Fair Deal” scheme will help keep rural parts of Cavan and Monaghan alive.

Under the current system, farm families and small business owners have to set aside 7.5 percent of the value of their land or business every year to fund a place for their loved ones in a nursing home. New legislation will see the contribution capped at 3 years.

However to qualify for the new scheme, a member of the family must have worked on the farm for three of the last five years, and commit to staying on the farm for the next six years. Speaking to Northern Sound, Maura Canning from the IFA said the stricter rules will benefit genuine farming families.
