The Peace Statue on the Cavan-Fermanagh border could be reinstated after its attempted theft over four and a half years ago.

The sculpture of Cú Chulainn and Mother Ireland was erected beside the bridge at Aghalane in 1999 to mark the bridge's reopening after The Troubles.

However, thieves attempted to steal it in 2016.

It's believed they tried to remove the sculpture to sell as scrap but failed after its weight made it difficult to remove from the site.

The statue has been stored by Cavan County Council since.

Cavan-Belturbet MD has been called on to reinstate the statue but measures to prevent access by vehicles may have to be looked at to prevent attempts to steal the statue.

The measure received the backing of all local Councillors and Independent member Brendan Fay says despite the need for additional measures, he hopes the statue will be put back:
