People in Cavan and Monaghan are being urged to conserve water to avoid reaching crisis point.
This is the message from Irish Water who says they may have to consider a water conservation order, or hosepipe ban in the coming weeks to protect the supply following a 20% consumption increase which has been exacerbated by the prolonged dry weather.
Some parts of Ireland are already in danger, and while Cavan and Monaghan are not currently in crisis, it is a possibility if there is not a re doubling of efforts by the public to cut down on their use of water.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound Peter Gallagher, Irish Water’s drinking water lead in Monaghan said they don’t want to impose restrictions.
If people act that may be avoided and his advice for the public going forward was to take shorter showers, avoiding baths, re-use household water for the garden, leave pressure washers, and hoses in the garden, and not to use paddling pools.
