The HSE is launching its 28-day no smoking challenge as part of National No Smoking Day.
National No Smoking Day coincides with the beginning of Lent, a period in which people are encouraged to give up some of their bad habits.
Pharmacist Tomás Conefry said any day is a good day to stop smoking, but that Ash Wednesday offers a good opportunity to focus on quitting.
He encouraged people to speak to their local pharmacy and avail of the supports it can offer, and added that people shouldn’t feel discouraged if they have difficulties in giving up.
