There are plans for an energy storage facility in Monaghan.
The development would store electricity during times of low usage, in order to boost supplies at times of high demand. Highfield Storage Limited is applying for the 1.1 hectare development in Rackwallace, outside Monaghan town.
The facility would consist of battery storage units housed in steel containers, a single storey electrical substation and associated works. The facility would have a capacity of up to 75 megawatts, storing electricity at times of high production and low usage – such as windy nights with high wind energy production.
A decision on the application is expected to be made by Monaghan County Council in the coming weeks.
