Positive start for Irish Athletes at the Euro Junior championships

It was a great start to the Euro Junior Championships for the Irish team on Day 1.

The big news is that Kate O Connor is in third place after 4 events of 7 in the Heptathlon with the Long Jump, Javelin and 800m to come.

She is 22 points off Gold and 20 points of Silver as it stands but this competition is far from over with 5 athletes all within 122 points of one another and they all have strengths in the 3 remaining events and it could all change come the final event the 800m which very few like after two tough days.

Of the other Irish in action Beechmount Harriers sprinter Davica Patterson cruised through to todays 400m Semi Final, Sommer Lecky of Finn Valley also qualified for the Women’s High Jump Final which is down for decision on Saturday evening.

In the heats of the Middle Distance, Sarah Healy was comfortable in qualification for Sunday’s 1500m Final.

Sophie O Sullivan, daughter of Ireland’s greatest Female Track athlete Sonia, progressed to the Semi Finals of the 800 metres along with Jo Keane of Ennis Track Club. In the final event of the day Shay Mc Evoy took the last automatic qualifying spot to make it to the 3000m Final on Saturday evening.

Focus from todays action from an Irish point of view will be on the Heptathlon and Dundalk athlete Kate O Connor, also in action is Aaron Sexton who will open his account over 200m in what is his last Championships before taking up full time Rugby within the Ulster Academy.

Before this the 800m ladies will be vying for spots in the Final as the Semi Final are timed for 11:15 Irish time.
