Five presidential hopefuls have confirmed they will come before Monaghan County Council this morning in a bid to win a nomination to contest the election. Peter Casey, Sarah Louise Mulligan, Gemma O’Doherty, Kevin Sharkey and Jimmy Smith confirmed their attendance ahead of the special meeting in the council chamber.
Senator Joan Freeman and Ballyhaise native Sean Gallagher are not available to attend, with Gavin Duffy, John Groarke and Marie Goretti Moylan not responding to the council’s invitation.
Local councillors will begin hearing from prospective candidates at 10am, with a vote on the nomination taking place later in the week. Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council David Maxwell said he made sure the dignity of the Office of President was upheld when selecting who to invite.
