Race for Aras an Uachtarain begins as Monaghan chooses not to support a candidate

Ballyhaise native Sean Gallagher and Senator Joan Freeman will contest Michael D Higgins in the race for the presidency.

They both secured enough backing from local authorities yesterday to run for the position. Businessman Gavin Duffy is nearly at the required quota of four councils – with support from three.

Sinn Fein is yet to announce it’s preferred candidate – with nominations set to close on the 26th of September.

Meanwhile, Monaghan County Council will not be supporting a candidate in the Presidential Election.Yesterday, the chamber heard from former Dragon’s Den star Peter Casey and journalist Gemma O’Doherty as they made their pitch for support.

Councillors had until 5pm yesterday to formally propose supporting a candidate, but it was confirmed to Northern Sound News that no motions of support were received. Independent Councillor Paudge Connolly had nominated Senator Joan Freeman prior to yesterday’s meeting but withdrew the nomination, meaning the council will not meet on Friday to vote on a candidate.
