‘An Empty Property Grant Scheme could be the solution to the housing crisis.’
That’s the view of Fianna Fail senator Robbie Gallagher speaking about the Party’s proposed grant which would encourage landlords or property owners to bring their vacant houses up to standard and rent them out.
The proposed grant would see landlords compensated for the full or partial costs of refurbishment.
Similar schemes have been brought in in the UK to deal with high vacancy rates there.
According to the latest CSO figures for 2016, there are almost 10,000 vacant units across Cavan and Monaghan.
