The Monaghan Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is reminding people that an animal is not just for Christmas.
Over 1,000 animals were seized across the country by the animal charity last year.
Of the 1,000 animals seized or surrendered, dogs totalled 818, cats 82 and there were 74 horses.
Sinead from the Monaghan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is urging people to think about the long term consequences of buying an animals.
She says Christmas is one of their busiest times of the year, and often don’t have enough space to take in unwanted animals.
