Theresa May resigns as British Prime Minister

Theresa May will step down as Conservative leader on June 7th. Amid mounting internal party pressure she has decided to step down – and will stay on as Prime Minister until a new Tory leader is elected.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has praised Mrs May for her determination, tenacity and courage in difficult times. Those three words – Brexit means Brexit – would come to dominate Theresa May’s time in charge.

Theresa May brought a Brexit deal back from Brussels that was roundly defeated in the House of Commons several times. And some within her own party were undermining her.

An emotional Theresa May announced she will step down as Tory leader:

Mrs May will stay on as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen. But the reign of Britain’s second female Prime Minister is over.
