Two Fine Gael Councillors in Cavan won’t contest local elections

Two sitting Fine Gael Councillors in Cavan aren’t expected to contest the local elections. The party will select the first of its Cavan local election candidates this evening, with a selection convention in the Ballyjamesduff area.

Winston Bennett is expected to be the only sitting councillor returned to the ticket. Councillor Paddy Smith isn’t contesting the convention, with his son Trevor nominated.

Virginia Councillor Paddy O’Reilly is also nominated but he’s not expected to contest the convention. The party is thought to be hoping to run three candidates in the district, with the third member to be added to the ticket at a later date.
