A local Senator is said to be "considering his options" after a controversial vote for the Fianna Fáil candidate for Cathaoirleach of the Seanad.

A local Senator is said to be "considering his options" after a controversial vote for the Fianna Fáil candidate for Cathaoirleach of the Seanad.

Diarmuid Wilson was one of three candidates for the party nomination ahead of last week's vote.

Senators Mark Daly and Denis O'Donovan also contested with Senator Daly ultimately elected as Chair.

Under the Government deal Fianna Fáil will hold the position for the next two and a half years before Fine Gael takes over.

Diarmuid Wilson has been a Senator since 2002 and had been widely tipped as the next Cathaoirleach.

It's believed he is unhappy with the procedure used to decide the Fianna Fáil candidate and is considering legal action.
