The local man who built New York's most iconic Cathedral

A blue plaque is being unveiled locally for the first Archbishop of New York, who was a native of south County Tyrone.

St Macartan's Church in Augher, County Tyrone, will reveal the plaque in honour of Archbishop John Joseph Hughes who served in New York between 1842 and his death in 1864.

In 1850 he founded the iconic St Patrick's Cathedral on 5th Avenue in the American city.

Archbishop Eamon Martin who's head of the Catholic Church in Ireland, will unveil the plaque on Saturday on what would have been the birthday of Archbishop Hughes.

The plaque will be unveiled at 10.45am. Local historian Eileen McKenna  recounted John Joesph Hughes life.
