An appeal is being made to try locate War of Independence medals awarded to an IRA volunteer killed in Cavan.

Sean McCartney was killed in action by British soldiers and the Black and Tans at Lappanduff Mountain in Cavan in 1921.

He was posthumously awarded two medals and it's thought they were collected by a Cavan person when his own family weren't in a position to do so.

His family believe the medals are still in Cavan, and have launched an appeal to have the returned before the centenary of his death next year.

Dominic Corr's mother was a first cousin Sean McCartney, and says having the medals would bring an end to decades of intergenerational trauma.

He joined Aaron McElroy on The Wider View today, and started by explaining more about who Sean McCartney was.
