A dispute over who should be a watchdog on small abattoirs is causing concern ahead of the Christmas rush.

The Irish Farmers Journal reports the disagreement between the Food Safety Authority and local authorities centres on who should pay for vets to oversee small-scale slaughterhouses.

It's believed one million euro in funding is needed to keep services going, and the current contract with the County and City Management Association is due to run out on November 30th.
