HEAR MORE: Local people urged to be aware of deadly radon gas

Parts of the local region have high levels of an invisible gas that’s a bigger killer than carbon monoxide.

Radon is a radioactive gas that’s linked to around 300 cases of lung cancer in Ireland every year and is being highlighted on what is European Radon Day. Ballyconnell in Cavan and Castleblayney in Monaghan have been deemed High Radon Areas and people living in these zones are most at risk.

It’s a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that builds up in homes, schools and workplaces and can be fatal if untreated. Stephanie Long, Senior Scientist with the Environmental Protection Agency joined Caroline Gauley on The Wider View and started by explaining why carbon monoxide is so much more well known:
