HEAR MORE: Local Senator on home-help hours shortfall

Around 35,000 home-help hours won't be delivered every week this year, according to the HSE.

It had planned to deliver 24 million hours in 2022, but expects a shortfall of nearly 2 million because of staff shortages.

Latest figures also show almost 5,100 people are on waiting lists for homecare, including over 250 in Cavan-Monaghan.

Our reporter, Diarmuid Pepper, recently spoke to local Senator Robbie Gallagher, who raised the issues in the Seanad last week.

He's called for an upcoming report on Home Care to consider a commonly used model in Australia and Britain, known as the "consumer-directed homecare scheme".

Senator Gallagher says it "allocates a certain amount of money to families to spend on whatever type of care they feel is right", and added that "this could give families more freedom while providing carers with more financial support".
