A housing development which had previously been granted planning permission by Cavan County Council is now being appealed.
An application to construct 58 homes in Mullagh is currently being reviewed by the higher planning authority.
Cavan County Council had given the green light for 14 three-bed dormer bungalows, 1 three-bedroom single storey dwelling, 26 three-bed two storey semi-detached dwellings, 16 four-bed two storey semi-detached dwellings, and 1 4-bed. The application submitted by Mary Crook and Anne O'Connell included a connection to all public services, a new entrance onto public road, as well as all associated site works.
Despite a number of submissions, Cavan County Council gave the go-ahead for the major development with 27 conditions attached. Now it is being appealed to An Bord Pleanála following concerns raised by the Boyne Catchment Anglers and Ciaran O'Kelly on behalf of Kells Anglers.
They claim the current wastewater plant serving the Mullagh area needs an upgrade. In submitted paperwork, the appellants noted the plant suffers from persistently low PH issues due to chemical dosing at two locations.
They say they are not opposed to the construction of new homes in Mullagh, but have insisted the wastewater plant is not fit for purpose. An Bord Pleanála is set to make a decision on the case by January 27th 2026.
