A Cavan senator has expressed her deep concern at the takeover of Supervalu in Virginia by Tesco.
According to Senator Pauline Tully, current suppliers of Supervalu have been told they must reduce their prices significantly in order to continue supplying the store.
She says that this will be a hammer blow to local businesses who are already operating in a tricky environment.

Speaking in the Seanad, Senator Tully called on the Government to implement an outright ban on below-cost selling.
