Speaking in the Seanad she said it is important for Cavan and Monaghan to each have a refuge centre

A Cavan Senator has emphasised the importance of having domestic violence refuge centres in both Cavan and Monaghan.

Her comments came during statements for International Women's Day, which was celebrated yesterday.

The Sinn Fein Senator said that the statistics in this are quite startling, outlining that 35% of women in Ireland have experienced psychological, physical and or sexual abuse from an intimate partner.

Speaking in the Seanad she said it is important for Cavan and Monaghan to each have a refuge centre.

She noted that Cavan County Council have been working very hard to identify a suitable place for a refuge in Cavan and would like an assurance that funding will be available through Cuan to provide a refuge to Cavan when this has been completed.

Senator Tully also added that she wants to see greater co-operation between the PSNI and An Garda Síochána.
