A County Cavan man is agreeing with calls on the importance of knowing where defibrillators are located, but notes CPR training is still important.
Eugene Smith of Laragh was reacting to a recent call for the HSE to work with Google Maps to allow people to search for their nearest defibrillator on the app.
Eugene has been involved with defibrillator initiative in his own community.
A few years back he took it on himself to locate all the defibrillators in his parish, drop a pin on Google Maps and share the location with all of the community via WhatsApp.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning, Eugene reminded of the importance of CPR training.
"We got training every year, every two years and a chap that was training us said don't be afraid to go in there. He said a person can't be any more dead than dead. He said don't be afraid to use your initiative and go in there and get, and do it. Everyone should train with CPR more so than the defib. There might not always be a defib beside you, but at least you can send someone for the defib if you know the location of it."
